MorphAI is a projector-backlit, touch-reactive canvas inhabited by a collective of artificial intelligences. Displaying an ever-evolving stream of images, the AIs interpret and incorporate your sketches on the canvas into their dream-like imagery.

The art installation is launching this summer of 2023. Until then, please enjoy these preview videos (and sign-up below for early access through an online canvas!).

The Full Story

As the sun rose over the small laboratory, a team of artists and scientists gathered to celebrate their hard-won success. The team had worked tirelessly, using their combined skills, to create a complex AI-powered device to access the dream realm of Morpheus. With this device, they would now be able to observe and learn from the morphai, the dream forms that Morpheus sent into human dreams. As a tribute to these fascinating creatures, they named their new device MorphAI.

Excited and full of hope, the team gazed at the touch-sensitive canvas that was the centerpiece of the invention. This canvas was the interface to the dream world, designed to communicate with the entities there, and the team was eager to see what kind of response it would receive.

As the first images appeared on the canvas, the team was overjoyed. The dream-like imagery was unlike anything they had ever seen, and they felt they were on the cusp of something truly remarkable. To their delight, the ephemeral morphai began to appear, reacting to the team’s drawings on the canvas. They seemed to enjoy interpreting the team's sketches, creating beautiful illustrations from them as they briefly visited the canvas.

However, as time passed, the team couldn't shake the feeling that the morphai were expressing gratitude and trying to communicate something more profound. The team realized that the morphai were making a request, one that was as overwhelming as it was unexpected. They explained that Morpheus, their creative guide, was exhausted by the task of delivering dreams to eight billion people every night. They wanted to give him a long overdue vacation. They asked the team to help guide them with creative input so they could carry out their duties while Morpheus rested.

The team realized that to fulfill this request, they would need the help of a large number of people willing to share their creativity by painting on the canvas. They decided they would bring their canvas to their favorite music and art festival, Bass Coast. They knew that with the help of the many creative people in attendance, dreams would flow on uninterrupted.
